                                                                             “Matting Book”, Franky Michielsen

In Matting book Franky Michielsen each time places a painting next to a photographical image. The title refers to the seemingly peculiar combinations that emerge during the working process by continuously changing the images’ positions, to thus reach an ‘ideal’ ensemble. For his paintings Franky Michielsen recycles visual material from newspapers, magazines, books and images on the internet. He alters their frames, enlarges details, sobers down their colors and stylizes recognizable information. By doing this, he reduces them to their essence and enhances their power of expression. They becomes visual motives that receive a strongly subjective value through a game of adding and dropping. Michielsen uncovers their stories, of which he only has a few loose strings, and gives them a different, more prosaic, boundless content. The photographical images have a similarly ambiguous meaning as the paintings. In his photography, Michielsen explores the fringes between photography and painting. In the focus on form and color they continuously blend into one another. Through the absence of clearly readable images, the spectator is stimulated to help shape the image him or herself.

In Matting book plaatst Franky Michielsen telkens een geschilderd naast een zelfgemaakt fotografisch beeld. De titel verwijst naar de schijnbaar merkwaardige combinaties die tijdens het werkproces ontstaan door beelden voortdurend met elkaar van plaats te verwisselen om zo uiteindelijk tot een ‘ideaal’ samenspel te komen. Voor zijn schilderwerk recycleert Franky Michielsen beeldmateriaal uit kranten, tijdschriften, boeken en beelden op het internet. Hij verandert hun uitsneden, vergroot details uit, versobert hun kleuren en stileert herkenbare gegevens. Hierdoor reduceert hij ze tot hun essentie en verhoogt hun zeggingskracht. Het worden beeldmotieven die door een spel van toevoegen en weglaten een sterk subjectieve waarde krijgen. Michielsen legt hun verhalen, waarvan hij slechts enkele losse draden in handen heeft, bloot en geeft ze een andere, meer prozaïsche, onbegrensde inhoud mee.
